The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) provide a single, shared standard for web accessibility. This provides more clarity in how ADA regulations apply to the web.

3 Different Conformance Levels Exist:

Minimum WCAG conformance has been met, with web page and content satisfying all Level A success criteria (or a conforming alternate version is provided).

The Web page satisfies all WCAG Level A and Level AA Success Criteria (or a Level AA conforming alternate version is provided).

The Web page satisfies all the Level A, Level AA and Level AAA Success Criteria (or a Level AAA conforming alternate version is provided).

Automated Scans vs. Manual Evaluations

Both automated scans and manual evaluation play integral roles in successfully maintaining an accessible website. Here are some of the key differences:

Automated scans are a great way to get started with testing, but even the best automated checkers only flag approximately 25% of WCAG 2.1 AA success criteria. This leaves the vast majority of WCAG criteria unchecked, making manual evaluation a critical component in accessibility testing.

In a manual evaluation, a digital accessibility expert will evaluate all critical user flows against WCAG criteria. An evaluation should be done with experts using a variety of assistive technologies on a variety of browsers. A manual evaluation will compliment the findings in an automated scan, detailing all accessibility issues found.
